Is there a solution for recycling scrapped electric vehicle batteries? Emphasizing sustainable development, 東海大學 partnered with 處鋰科技 to jointly develop "recycled graphite material", and their recent research has achieved significant results. 東海副校長張嘉修表示 that the research team's scientific achievements not only allow the environmentally friendly recycled graphite material to attain discharge performance equivalent to brand-new graphite material, but can also effectively address current environmental problems in society.

東海大學產業永續創新與智慧零碳技術開發及服務聯盟(ZCTSA) said today (22) that, as a co-chair of ZCTSA, Professor Lin Zhengyu's team from 東海化材系 recently partnered with 處鋰科技 and achieved a major breakthrough. The "recycled graphite material" jointly developed by both parties, after various performance tests, has been confirmed that the regenerated graphite powder's capacity, cycle life and charge-discharge performance in cells are not inferior to brand-new graphite powder.

Project leader Lin Zhengyu pointed out that current discarded lithium battery processing technologies in many countries mostly crush batteries and collect mixed black powder for purification and sale.

Such end-of-life processing techniques cannot recover the various important material components in lithium batteries and are not environmentally friendly; however, through 處鋰科技's proprietary recycled material recovery technology, the graphite and other important materials in the batteries can be effectively recovered and successfully fabricated into lithium ternary battery cells with excellent tested performance.

Lin Zhengyu said 處鋰科技, with unique technology, has successfully recycled end-of-life batteries from electric vehicles or energy storage sites into recycled graphite powder. In the future, both parties will continue to use recycled graphite materials to establish testing standards and carry out marketing promotion.

處鋰科技董事長陳文賢 pointed out that the successful recovery of recycled graphite material for battery anodes brings significant benefits to the lithium battery industry, and the purity of the recovered material and the properties it demonstrates all require professional organizations to verify their reliability. In the future, they will continue to further integrate industry-academia cooperation with 東海大學.

Chen Wenxian further said that under the trend of net-zero carbon emissions, the European Union also requires that by 2027 imported electronic products must contain a certain proportion of recycled materials. The emergence of this recycled graphite powder can be seen as a major leap forward: not only does it keep strategic materials in Taiwan, it can also reduce production costs and decrease dependence on foreign graphite raw materials, thereby making products more competitive. This research is a major breakthrough.
